What happens is that it works. I'm in 1.66 right now, using
t:\arachne\mail\ as the path in arachne.cfg. I tested accessing the
individual files in t:\arachne\mail\members.hip and did so with no
problem.

If I understand what you are saying, what happens when I go to 'all
files' and indirectly access a message?? I'd already done that with
1.66 ... since I can't remember if I did with 1.70 I'll brb
I'm back, writing from 1.70 this time. If I go to desktop/All Files,
select mail, select members.hip -- I get a list of all the files in that
directory. When I select one of the files, I get the same Arachne error
message.

They are now ... for purposes of this experiment.
Using the path t:\arachne\mail\members.hip\12345678.mes
... with 1.66 will display the message either through the InSight
interface or working through 'all files' outside InSight.
... with 1.70 will *not* display the message either way.
