Sir Joseph Whitworth toured England (don't know
about the rest of the UK) and proposed "his" thread
standard in 1841. One of those great leaps forward,
making machinery more universal.

Of course, the threadform was cocked up in 1948
by the US-UK-Canadian pow-wow which standardized
the UNC/F thread for imperial fasteners. This doesn't
have the radiused crests and roots, leading to stress
concentrations and snapped bolts.

The UK has preferred metric fasteners since the mid-60s.

King Dick are your best bet for BSW spanners. Everyone
wants to get his hands on a good King Dick :-)
