Is this the same "Whitworth" who invented and designed
the highly famed "Whitworth" rifle, which used a twisted
hexagonal bore and fired hexagonal bullets? This system
was quite a departure from the use of cylindrical-ogive
shaped bullets designed for use in rifles employing the
common "lands-and-grooves" system of rifling. These rifles
are reputed to be the most accurate of all those used in
the American Civil War. They were imported from England by
the South for use by snipers. Although the Whitworth rifles
were reputed to be far more accurate than any others then in
use, they suffered from the disadvantage of accumulating
much fouling and requiring cleaning between shots.
