Ah Ha!

This might also explain the problem with the "red boxes".
(if the "JPEGargs" and "FILEargs" lines in arachne.cfg were also trashed)

If so:
You may disregard my previous reply on that problem.

And please accept my apologies for not thinking of that possibility sooner.
