I too have always had those smiley faces creeping into my ARACHNE.CFG.
Every time I clean them out of there they always come back to haunt me.
In my case the smiley faces do not appear to be causing me any problems.
I just don't like their being in my ARACHNE.CFG because I don't know
where they are coming from and I feel that they just should not be there.

I just checked my ARACHNE.CFG, and there were no smiley faces. One safeguard is
to maintain a saved copy under another name, or in a different directory, where
Arachne won't modify it. Then when your ARACHNE.CFG becomes farkled, you can
copy back the saved copy.
