Hi list and King of Padova,
Arachne does an excellent job with all online activities. But for
reading and composing of messages the graphical interface is
unnecessary and too slow as well. If you can afford to read your
mail online and call inserted links it makes sense to use
Arachne (if you connect with a modem this will be rather
expensive).
If you do 'real' work with email, you might consider So you may
consider another way. Let Arachne upload and download your
messages, but edit, sort, compose, and archive them with another
program. All you have to care for is that the files to be sent (.TBS)
match the format known to Arachne.
I consider Pegasus Mail for DOS (PMail) to be the best email client
for DOS. It offers such a rich possibility of customizing
(codepage conversion, menu, mime plug-ins, adapting the message
formats and file names). It is able to sort a huge amount of incoming
mail according to addresses and subject lines. You can even run an
unmoderated mailing list with this feature. PMail's flexibility
makes it a very good complement to Arachne: Arachne does the online
jobs POP3 and SMTP. Pegasus is quicker and more practical for offline
reading, composing, sorting.
If you like to setup PMail for use with Arachne and need any
hints, please ask be free to ask Dale Mentzer or me (on this list or
probably to private e- mail).
BTW a further question:
Arachne like every other browser will always need to have some kind
of e-mail module. Otherwise she would not be able to proceed all
those mailto-links. But would it not be possible to hand mailto-links
over to another program, eg. PMail?

Christof Lange
