I must say I'm enjoying these Linux discussions immensely - and
learning a lot at the same time. Having been following this particular
thread, though, I find there's a large hole in my understanding
somewhere.

When I type 'startx', I get something that I now know is called a
window manager. Yet I seem to understand from the messages on this
thread that you don't HAVE to have a WM running with X - X could run
e.g. Netscape on its own - have I got that right? In which case, how do
you 'startx' without starting a WM with it? Also, if you could run X and
then Netscape, how would you also run, say, the dialler to get Netscape
connected? Lastly, what file (or whatever) controls what WM you get when
you run 'startx'? On Slack 3.5 it's something with a pleasant cyan
background. On Redhat 7.1, it's either KDE or Gnome (could I get the
cyan thing from Slack3.5?). On Debian, it's ... (I can't get that past
the installation stage yet!!)

Sorry if this is a really dumb basic question, but inquiring minds
would like to know!

   Thanks,

Gerald (still with tons to learn!)
