  No, each window has a title bar... in every wm I've
seen except 9wm.  It's the title bar which contains
the buttons to minimize, kill, roll-up, or whatever.

  If so, that obscurity would have to be lain at 
Michael's feet, not Linux's.  ;-)

 
  I just remembered that on RH5.x you could do
'startx $(which fvwm2)'  to start any wm you want, and 
it still merges in your "preference" files.

  In 6.x, you can still do that with 
'xinit $(which fvwm)'  but you only get the plain wm 
without any xterm or xmailbox or anything else you 
might have in your .Xdefaults.
