I watched CNN and the other networks for hours and didn't see this.
I did see endless views of the airplane hitting the second tower.

There has been a careful and considered official response to this
terrible act of carnage. Many American leaders have cautioned the
American people not to jump to conclusions and we have not responded
with immediate bombings or reprisals.

America is a pluralistic society--our citizens come from all over
the world--and we understand that the acts of a few cannot be
attributed to the many.

But we are not going to tolerate this attack on our society. The
full force and resolve of the American people will be dedicated to
identifying those responsible and they will be brought to justice.

Of necessity this will involve military action--most likely ground
troops in Afganistan, as well as massive investigative and police
actions elsewhere.

I do not think our motive will be revenge, but rational self-defense.

I feel very strongly about this and so do most Americans.

Due to the horrific nature of the attack it is quite understandable
that a few Americans have responded with intense, undifferentiated
rage--but that has been rare and almost universally discouraged.

Many Americans understand the complexity of the world and are quite
willing to cope with the truth. We understand that we are being
attacked by a small group of well financed, orgainized and trained
religious zealots who are willing to die in order to disrupt and
terroize our society.

And we understand that we must act now to protect ourselves. I think
our leaders understand the complexity of that task and that the first
step of our response must be to identify exactly those responsible
and only then to take direct, sustained, and deliberate action to
eliminate them as a threat.
