I've also experienced huge problems with ReiserFS. After trying
ReiserFS, ext2/3, XFS and JFS I would say that ReiserFS is the very
worst of the lot... Personally I would recommend XFS - after using it
for two months now I've had no file system errors, even with lots of
systems hangs due to an overheating CPU. :(

The only problem with XFS is that it's practically impossible to
undelete files... So be very careful of what you delete.

In regards to startup / shutdown speeds, the best thing to do in my
opinion is make sure that you don't have any unnecessary processes
loading at startup.
