There was an issue when going from <= 5.0 client/server combos to > 5.0client/server, because a few of the APIs got updated in 5.0.1, and some things like Groups were stored and referenced slightly differently. Apart from that, the advice is sound. If both are at 5.1.2 or above (and if not, WHY not?), upgrade the clients before the server if the rollout cannot be better coordinated.
