If you are in Best Practice View in Developer studio then you cannot convert a base (unmodified) object to a custom object with a right context menu option You can only convert it into an overlay using menu option convert to overlay But if you had had to convert the base to custom you could easily open the object in Best practice mode and use save as, the object will be created as custom
