Keep in mind that this is *not* happening on the stable version of debian (4.0 
codename etch).

Perl 5.10 has been accepted in the unstable version Sid where packages can be 
upgraded without much notice and break other things. Sid is debians first 
testing ground before it enters the testing phase and finally applied to the 
stable version. This process normally takes quite some time.

Debian unstable (Sid) should bever be used for production systems.
Debian testing is not more unstable than many other distros and is also what 
Ubuntu is forked off every 6 months.
