If you are patient, you could make sure that in /etc/apt/sources.list the distribution has the actual name and NOT stable, unstable or so. I forgot what the current name of testing or unstable is. Then once the new stable comes out you automagically have a stable debian system with the upgrade. ASSP of course does not need to be changed at all, since it uses perl, an interpreted language.
