You asked about www.partimage.org I have tried it (Partimage) as part of SystemRescueCd found at http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page and successfully used it to back up and restore partitions (not entire drives). The interface seemed a little clunky but it did the job. I keep it around as a useful tool.
