I am going to chime in here because I am certainly
interested in this issue ...
I found two areas of FreePBX that got in my way ...
setting up an IVR to use sound files that were not already
in the FreePBX database was a chore ... and the way the IVR was configured
within FreePBX was not nearly as flexible as need ... other than these two
items, I had some heartburn over the complexity of the file layout, the
dependency on MySQL instead of native config files and general
lack of flexibility ... I feel that way too many assumptions were made for me
and that I was no longer in control over the was going to behave
...
for Astlinux, I see a need to two supporting applications
...
first and foremost I want an administrative interface that
runs in a web browser similar to what we have now ...
personally, I like it simple ... I prefer to edit the
".conf" files myself as opposed to having the system force me into a wizard
method ... my only beefs with the current interface is the lack of any sort of
"file upload" facility built in ... I would love to be able to edit my config
files offline on another machine the upload them to the Astlinux machine ...
this would be a nice feature ...
I also want some help from the admin interface with
provisioning phones ...
a template system that knows the requirements of the top 10
most popular phone's & ata's would be great, but I would be happy if there
was a simple method of uploading the binary and text config files to the
tftpboot, ftp and/or wwwroot folders ... that and making it easier to navigate
to these locations to edit the text files ... this would be a big time saver for
me and should not require a heroic level of effort to implement
...
secondly, I see a need
for a user support interface that is also a web based application ...
I like the basics of what Joshua Peper outlined ...
this is a nice feature set that the average user should be able to deal with
... I think these user oriented features presented in a pretty package
would be very attractive to potential clients
...
Basic functions we would like to add are:
* Listening voicemail
* Changing the start menu for callers
* changing passwords for remote logon voicemail
* Defining groups and agents
* Some sort of status panel, something like
FOP. While
I admire the FreePBX application very much, I hope that we avoid the temptation
to take it quite that far ... I would like to see a middle of the road
approach ... I definitely am in favor of a "keep it simple" approach to this
issue ... but agree that we need a more robust admin/user maintenance interface
as a high priority ...
Would
I pay a monthly fee for something like this ??? No ... any sort
of recurring cost would be unacceptable ... I am not interested
in the "rental software" model at all ... this is not appealing
to me ...
Would
I pay a one time fee per installtion for something like this ??? if the
price were reasonable, certainly would ... a one time license fee per
installation would be acceptable if the price was reasonable ... however,
a per user fee would make it a lot less attractive ... license fee based on a
per server installation is agreeable ...

We are based in the netherlands, and have a shortage of programmers and
good ICT people. I'd like to put a intern on it but i can't seem to find one.
I'l keep you guys informed.
