If you add anything to your system, or change any file that you had to
previously change your astlinux box to read/write from read only mode,
the updated file is stored on the unionfs partition.  After reading up
on unionfs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UnionFS) it helped me
understand what was going on.
