Let me clarify: I am overwriting the recovery partition with the
version I want, and then I am using the factory restore option to do
the install.

I am doing it this way because I have read that if I can get back to a
working version via the recovery process, then the normal Apple
upgrade process can bring the unit up-to-date.

Using this method, the results were as follows:

    * version 1.0 works, including the remote. BUT then
the normal Apple upgrade process fails with an
error message telling me to press MENU to recover,
and and the ATV hangs. MENU - does nothing, not even
and LED flash. If I cycle the power, then it reboots
back into 1.0 as if nothing had happened.

    * version 2.02 same as 1.0 and I can reboot back to
      2.02

    * version 2.4 boots up but the remote doesn't work;
MENU - does work in this case and I can recover
      back to 2.4.

    * version 3.01 same as 2.4 and I can recover back
      to 3.01

These results are what let me to suspect IRReceiverUpdaterTool2. I
understand that 1.0 through 2.02 use the same version of IR firmware.

My theory is that the normal Apple upgrade process depends on
IRReceiverUpdaterTool2 successfully completing. I suspect this because
after the normal upgrade process fails under 1.0 or 2.02, I can reboot
right back into 1.0 or 2.02 without having to do a recovery.
