I appreciate your response. If nothing else, you are helping me to gather my thoughts.
I have a couple of additional theories, but they assume that the IR firmware update is indeed where its getting stuck. You mentioned one of these, that the firmware update partially took hold and that it is stuck there. Doing a little brainstorming, these are the ideas I come up with: 1. Firmware update partially took and is stuck. 2. Flash EEPROM memory has failed in way that it can't be written. (This assumes it uses flash memory. I don't actually know what kind of memory is used for the IR firmware. 3. Power supply has gone flakey-- it can power the AppleTV but can't provide the extra oomph needed to write the flash memory for IR firmware update. 4. Software incompatibiliy-- Perhaps the recovery partition isn't fully interchangeable between all AppleTV's? I lost the recovery partition on this unit, so I am using a copy of the partition from other units. Maybe the IR update would take if I could find an image of the recovery partition that is compatible with this particular ATV. Hopefully someone knows more about this than I do and will say "There's yer problem..."
