I have Quad ESL 63s, and make my own ESLs and amplifiers, and I find
that the most important factor for sound stage is not the speakers
themselves, but their placement in the room, and the listener's
position relative to the speakers and walls, etc.
I also must confess the #1 soundstage enhancement device (no, not the
colly-herb, though that works too...) is my Carver C-9 Sonic Hologram
box. It is a crosstalk canceller that inverts phase and crossfeeds
signal to/from each channel. Many other companies have made similar
devices over the years, and crosstalk cancelation is also used in a lot
of computer speakers and sound card drivers ("spatial effect" type
stuff).
The crosstalk canceller makes the speakers disappear. Instruments are
highly localized and spread out all over the place. They should add
such a function to the DSP in the squeezebox!
