I can't believe you made me waste my time skimming though all that, only to get to the end and find that he never actually listened to the thing!
The difficulty in my mind with implementing a USB dac is in keeping the latency low. It is this that you will have to trade off against the possibility of synchronisation errors. There should be no difficulty if latency is not a concern, and for a music server it isn't. For films it is of some concern, for recording, mixing, dj'ing etc it is a real concern. $1750 seems a serious amount of money for such a device.
