I just spent $65 on a .5m cardas microtwin rca pair- which didn't yield as much of a benefit (compared to decent monster cable) as decoding to wav on the server does. There is more air around instruments. Cymbals are much more 'there', to a fault if the recording clips them. I also seem to be getting deeper into the noise floor, noticing flaws in rips I hadn't before. Yes- I have a very active imagination.
Both the file format and cables are hard to switch for testing though, and maybe the cardas cables make the difference more evident. It was evident enough the first time I switched a couple weeks ago that I hadn't 'tested' in any way. I switched back and forth a couple times a minute ago, to remember, and was surprised how flat the FLAC via SB sounded. Listen to the wav for awhile, then switch back and see if the difference manifests.
