After changing the FLAC settings there is a clear difference in my setup
through the digital output from the Squeezebox. [Lavry Black DA10, AKG
K340 and Grado HF-1 headphones] Everything is less strained and more
natural sounding. I had a friend over yesterday and he picked up on it
right away as well.

FLAC settings aside, my Eastsound CD player still has a bit more
resolution and more punchy bass than the Squeezebox when using each as
transport only. Quite surprising. I'm thinking that I might be able
to further close the gap by building a linear PSU or battery pack for
the Squeezebox. :)
