I think that your average PC could handle several SB clients with no
degredation in performance.  Each file is decompressed and then
streamed into the SB.  This requires little processing power and seems
to require little RAM (watch your Windows task list while clicking
play!).

I think the real reason to have decompression algorithms on board is
internet radio.  There is no industry compression standard so the
client must be able to play all kinds of files.
