Hey it'll be fun! First, assume your power amp will be ebay fodder. It might not, but let's be safe here. Now recognise that you are willing to spend £2k (say) on an amp-speaker setup that you want to sound great. Get yourself along to a dealer or three and listen to such systems. Get him to play it with a good CD player, and try a £500 DAC and see if it helps. Initially, be led by the dealer, as he should know his kit. Try also to listen to good systems that you could get second hand. You could get an amp-speaker system like mine for under £2k on ebay, and mine sounds incredible, especially for acoustic (classical, folk, jazz...) Because you are spending good money, don't stop until you get something that really sounds amazing to your ears. You are spending enough to get something that sounds really very good indeed. Do pay attention to what other people say, but don't buy until you have heard several redically different systems. To answer your question, there is no perfect balance between source, amp and speaker cost. Treat with a little suspicion anyone who plays you a £100 speaker with a £2k amp or vice versa, but the most important thing is to throw away any preconceptions. I have heard a little 10W £300 Audio Innovations valve sound great with a massive set of horns, and the audio business creamed itself over the Wharfedale Diamond 8.1 a few years ago, saying that they were great with £10k SET amps. I find that speakers have the most 'character' in the sound, but this is not particularly related to quality. To take the Living Voice ones that I have, spending money to go from a £2k speaker to a £7k speaker within the range will have almost no effect on character, but will improve resolution dramatically, while getting a B&W (at any price) would totally change the sound, which some people would prefer but others would not. Apples and pears, horses for courses, choose your cliche. So the answer is that there is no answer, but you should be able to have fun trying to find an answer that suits you!
