The electronics are all of pretty high quality these days unless you go out of your way to find awful stuff. Try this experiment to see what is more important- switch between two CD players in your system and see if you can hear a difference. Now switch between two sets of speakers. The speakers will make a large and obvious difference, whereas the CD players will sound pretty much the same. This is true for amplifiers and preamps, too. This is why I suggest you put the money into the speakers/room treatment.
