You need to find that hex key and adjust the output attenuation so that
you are operating as close to 0db as possible.  CD recording volumes
tend to vary, and I generally find myself listening at -6db to about
-20db - which sounds just fine.

I've also found that the combination of replay gain adjustment and the
digital volume control adversly affects sound quality.  YMMV, but my
advice is to turn the automatic volume adjustment feature off, unless
you ujst want background party music.
