You need to find that hex key and adjust the output attenuation so that you are operating as close to 0db as possible. CD recording volumes tend to vary, and I generally find myself listening at -6db to about -20db - which sounds just fine. I've also found that the combination of replay gain adjustment and the digital volume control adversly affects sound quality.
