Of course. In fact, the bottom 8 bits are zeros in this situation - hence my earlier statement that for CD sourced data, no loss of resolution even begins until you attenuate by 48dB.

Are you saying that (in the specific case of the Squeezebox digital volume control) the various discrete steps are deliberately chosen so that for attenuations up to 30dB, the arithmetic result always maintains the bottom 8 bits as all zeros? If that is what you're saying then fair enough. I'm not sure that I can see what advantage it would have, since the rounding errors of not selecting such special steps will be below the 16bit quantisation level anyway.
