Ahh.. hrm.. didn't notice that before.. Yes, you would need external attenuation for balanced. Hrm.. I havn't done the math for this, but I would guess that it doesn't matter that much which end of a cable you attenuate. The cable itself adds some attenuation, say for theory 1db. the attenuator adds more resistance for another 10db. series resistance is an adding function, so you would get 11db of attenuation no matter if the resistors are at the beginning, middle, or end of the connection.
