This method was also used to judge pictures at transmission IIRC. AFAIK, no-one has really developed any very objective measurements for moving pictures. In the TV buying example you quoted, you might have a screen with fabulous static resolution and contrast ratios, but horrible 'smear' or 'stutter' with movement. You may also find that a picture with excellent horizontal or vertical resolution, looks soft in the diagonals because of some picture processing artifacts.
That's not so say that standard electrical/electronic measurements weren't/aren't ever used - it's just that most engineers understand the limitations of the measurements, how to interpret them, and the variation that can result from slight differences in measurement techniques. Consumers on the other hand rarely do. In the car market, manufacturers routinue provide a fairly standard set of measurements (0-60, mpg, top-speed, crash ratings etc etc), but I think the vast majority of buyers recognise that it isn't actually going to tell them how the car is to drive or whether their kids will find it comfortable in back. So why is it that some people seem to think that an audio product can be completely defined in terms of bandwidth, SNR and THD?
