As far as I understand it, the SPDIF output of a Squeezebox is always
24 bit. It just so happens that, when it's at full volume, the most
significant 16 of those 24 bits is the same as the original 16 bits
that were streamed to it from Slimserver (and the bottom 8 bits are all
zero). If you pass a 24 bit SPDIF signal to a 16 bit DAC, it simply
ignores the bottom 8 bits.

CalleG: you ask what's so bad about digital volume controls. The answer
is: nothing, provided they're done correctly (which they are in the
Squeezebox/Transporter).
