Provided I understand what Patrick said correctly, then while it's true that no resolution is lost in the arithmetic (for attenuations less than 30dB), the resulting 24 bit sample must then be passed through a 24 bit DAC. And to achieve "no loss of resolution" then requires a perfectly linear 24 bit DAC. Of course, no such beast actually exists in the real world, so the bottom 2 or 3 bits are probably random noise. In that sense, there is some minor loss of resolution, but I'd suggest that those inaccuracies are probably orders of magnitude smaller than the tracking inaccuracies of even the best analogue potentiometer.
