I'm sorry for being so slow, but I'd greatly appreciate a simple rundown of the situation.... :)
I have a Squeezebox 3 with Slimserver v6.5 connected directly to my monoblocks. What are the drawbacks of using the SB digital volume control? Max output from the SB is very very loud, and it do sound a bit strained. Could be my amps, could be the analog output stage of the SB - my suspicions is towards the SB. Is the digital volume control in the SB3 as good as using the volume control on a preamp, down to -30dB that is? I've seen elsewhere that the SB's digital volume control should be avoided at all costs... but from this post I understand that is not the case? The reason for asking is that I'm planning to buy a small preamp. I really like remote controlled volume. Would I lose sound quality by using the preamp just for coarse control (ie crank it up for party) and using the SB just to adjust between, say, volume 40-100? That way I can buy a small non-remote preamp... Sorry if this is stupid, but I'd really like my digital volume control confusion to be sorted out. I guess the short question is "Is the SB3 digital volume control also 24-bit, thus not degrading analog output provided volume level is above 40?" -- CalleG ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CalleG's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=8020 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=28133 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
