So I bought a Creative Wireless Music to replace the Roku Soundbridge
that my brother ran off with. That piece of crap (the CWM, not my
brother) taught me a lot about life, and I bought a Squeezebox. What a
fantastic device. I now listen to music all the time at home, which I
neve have before. Unlike the other devices, it even plays the songs all
the way through without stopping! Unfortunately, this has highlighted my
rather dismal home audio setup. My Squeezebox is connected to the
powered speakers that came with my old computer and, well, they don't
exactly fill my living room with a cacophony of sound.

So I'm going to buy some more audio equipment. But I have no idea about
it. My usual plan with things I have no idea about is to spend as little
money as possible. But my god, how much audio equipment is there out
there! I have no idea where to start. I am thinking that I need:

1. An amplifier
2. Some speakers

Is this right? Do I need a "preamp", whatever that is? I have no other
audio devices apart from the Squeezebox. Do all speakers plug into all
amplifiers? Will all amplifiers plug into my Squeezebox? It has a nice
"digital out" thing on it - should I only use digital ones? Do I need
to buy expensive cables? One large problem I have is that I live in an
appartment, so realistically I can't buy speakers that are more than
about 8 inches wide/deep and a couple of feet high. I'm not against
buying things secondhand - I was half thinking that perhaps speaker
technology hadn't changed much lately and I could buy some secondhand
speakers and a new amp. Maybe that's nonsense.

Any help much appreciated - I feel completely lost. I'm going to buy
whatever someone tells me to buy, so it might as well be someone on a
forum instead of some guy in a shop. :)

Chris
