itunes is known for having a badly designed digital volume control. To do a fair comparison going into the DAC both itunes and the SB should have the digital volume set to max, and then you'd have to match sound levels somehow (as it's unlikely the level will be exactly the same).
Furthermore (I think) OSX will resample all audio to whatever is set in the Audio MIDI control panel, and so if that's not equal to the sample rate of the music you were playing you're listening to a resampled stream.
