I use a Shek d2 and find it a big improvement on the SB3 internal DAC. Great value for money.
What it does well is space, naturalness and timbre. Your choice of large-scale choral may not be the best type of music for it though - it is not as dynamic as my Shanling CD player, and it can be tripped up by complex music (although is better than the SB3 in this regard). Since it's still not really good enough for critical listening for me, I've ordered an SB+, which at £1000 is a bit cheaper than the Transporter. I don't know if I'll be using the Shek or not. For another free (or nearly!) punt, try the Beresford TC-7510, which is British and just £100 shipped: http://www.homehifi.co.uk/products/TC-7510UK.html - not sure if this is a NOS DAC like the Shek, or what chip it uses.
