Be very careful about "oomph". If the SB3 had more "oomph" than the CD
player, it might be that you'd be saying the CD player had more
"subtlety".
Everything has two sides: "sparkle" ("harshness"), "warmth"
("boominess"), "clarity" ("overly forward") etc etc. If you've already
decided what your reference player is, or have built your system around
it, the other will be judged with a negative by default.
Things like intelligibility of vocals and a soundstage with a natural
perspective (hear the whole, not just the extent of the borders) can't
be misconstrued so easily, so focus on these qualities. For example, I
used to prize the projection of vocals in my old CDP. It was only when
heard blind against the SB3 that this plus point was revealed to be a
flat and forward soundstage for the vocals i.e. a negative. Yes the
difference is there, but are you interpreting it fairly?
My opinion is that good modern sources (Logitech ones, certainly) tend
to measure better than old ones, and consequently sound better. I would
be distrustful of ANY source that sounds significantly different to
other modern sources. IME modern sources tend to sound kind of
similar...which is only logical if you think about the job of a source,
which is to provide an undistorted signal.
There have been some statements on this forum that high-end sources
tend to sound quite different to each other. If that is true I wouldn't
want a so-called "high-end" source near my system.
