Smart Gain won't do anything unless your rips contain Replaygain tags...in which case the volume will be manipulated on playback. I presume you've disabled all file formats apart from FLAC-FLAC or FLAC-WAV? The PSU issue has much less effect on the SB when it is used with a DAC, since the important analogue circuitry is now in the DAC and thus isolated somewhat from what is happening inside the SB or its PSU... Are you saying that when you plug in the linear PSU (without connecting the PSU to the SB) it has a bad effect on your system playing CD? That's unexpected and may point to an unusual problem.. Or does the CD player sound only worsen if the SB is connected to the PSU? Do you live in a flat or a house? Have you tried unplugging as many things as possible from the mains to see if something else is (also) affecting the sound? How is your computer connected to the SB? wi-fi via a router? Your system does seem unusualy sensitive to noise/RF for some reason.
