Mike/Zanash , that's incredibly generous of you, but Cumbria/East
Midlands is too far to ask you to travel. But I greatly appreciate the
offer.

The PSU I had built is RS part 173-1604 inside an old computer PSU box
(which already has the IEC inlet) and connected to the original
Squeezebox DC cable. I just tried plugging it in across the room and
having the PSU box about 2m from the rest of the hi-fi with the
Squeezebox in between. This made no difference. I'm assuming therefore
(possibly falsely) that it's not the effect of having the PSU near the
hi-fi that's the problem, but either the DC cable still throwing out
EMI (even though it's got 2 ferrites on) or it's something that's
passed down the phono connectors to the Amp.

As Phil said: if the noise is being transmitted via the PSU > SB >
phono cables > amp, then maybe using a DAC (Toslinked) would break the
connection. Who knows? I saw a Benchmark DAC1 on eBay today for £425
but I'm damned if I'm going to buy it just on the off chance it changes
the sound to something more musical and warm.

It'd pain me to go back to CDs, but at the moment the sound I get is
just flat compared to the Creek. I'd still keep the Squeezebox of
course, but I could put on a CD when I really want a quality sound. But
that strikes me as an inconvenient workaround, not a solution.

Buggeration.
