For me this sums up the argument. IME it isn't like that - because
everyone agrees they can see the difference between an SD and HD
picture but not everyone can hear the type of differences in sources
being discussed here.

Maybe this is because the people who can't hear the differences don't
have good hearing, or don't have good enough systems. I don't believe
that myself.

Your comment about the Creek having deeper bass is interesting since,
as far as I can tell the SB3 bass goes down pretty low. My system (with
InguzEQ) is pretty flat to e.g. 20Hz
http://www.yeats.co.uk/public/Audio/fr4.jpg. The perception of bass
extension is very open to state of mind. When there is a real factor,
it's more about higher frequencies masking more extended bass, rather
than a question of the actual presence of deeper frequencies: for me
digital EQ has improved the bass 100 times more than any change in
source.

As you can see from my graph, massive peaks caused by a combination of
room modes and non-neutrality of the speakers was masking the deeper
bass without EQ. That didn't mean the SB3 / rest of system wasn't
capable of producing these frequencies. They were lost in the 31.5Hz
and 100Hz modes, that's all. Luckily my amp and speakers have a lot of
headroom and produce high SPLs with low distortion...this means the
large corrections are handled without stress. The change in sound is a
revelation across the spectrum...and the graph shows it's not just in
my head. Think of digital EQ as a precise, personalised crossover and
it won't offend your high-end sensibilities too much :-)

For me the tonality of any source ("bright", "warm", "midrange
forward") is irrelevant since I would re-run the correction
measurements and get a flat-ish curve again. I am more interested in
things like intelligibility of vocals, soundstage, detail etc. I find
the SB3 is not wanting in these areas.

Regards, Darren
