The biggest factors in bass response are the speaker response and room-modes. It doesn't make sense to try to correct these by using a source with a different bass response. What we want is sources which are accurate, including a flat FR, and then we can deal with the problems of each speaker and room on a case-by-case basis (change speaker, move rooms, improve room treatment and finally EQ). Otherwise you end up with a source tailored to one speaker / room and that is a small market. However, I agree with you about external DACs. I've decided to avoid S/PDIF and sidestep a whole world of debate. If I ever upgrade from an SB3 it will be an SB<n>/SB+/Transporter.
