Phil, Now I agree with you :-D

Basically, I believe you need some sort of treatments to bring RT60
figures down to an acceptable level in the bass region, and probably 
diffusers or absorbers to "kill" some of the first wall reflections.
Not too much, your spouse will have to agree ==:-O

Then the DRC will raise the bar to a much higher level.

Additionally, I think the physics of DRC below 200Hz is very different
from above 200Hz.
Because of the fact that below some 150 - 200Hz the ear/brain is not
really able to distinguish the direct sound waves from the reflected
sound waves, hence you may easily compensate.

Above 200Hz you cannot just compensate based on a measured combination
of amplitude of the direct and reflected sound, a significant
compensation here will mess up the amplitude response. If you utilize a
Dunlavy loudspeaker with a ruler flat frequency response, you shouldn't
need any DRC above 200Hz, because the ear perceives the direct response
as the thing that counts. (If the room is fine)
And if you have line source speakers, this gets even easier because of
the response pattern  that makes them less dependent of the room
influence.

my opinion: I really believe it's in the lower octaves that DRC really
matters...... and here it may do great wonders.....
