We are talking past each other a little bit here... re-reading your original post, it seems to me your problem is all about replay gain. I am not an expect on replay gain but I would think that if all your albums were normalized to 3-10dB lower that maybe the gain tags were not set correctly. Or maybe it's just something you'll have to live with, because it needs the headroom for other, more dynamic tracks.
Also disregard my previous comment wrt clipping the amp's input. Yes it's true on a preamp or multichannel receiver there is a hard limit to the input level. I thought you were referring to a standalone amp (i.e. the thing after the preamp).
