Not really. A "digital coax" must be 75-ohm with 75-ohm connectors to
meet the spec. RCA/Phono connectors can't be 75-ohm, so... (BNC
connectors at both ends are required). I would also add that a minimum
length of 1.5m is required to minimise reflections. The fact that
pretty much any old cable will actually work is just luck really.

What is certainly true is that a "proper" $18 cable as above is
identical in performance to a $500 one ! :)
