Well, yes, it can be held to a different (or higher, if you wish)
standard, only if it's a niche market. It depends clearly on the money
involved. 
During the eighties, because of all that money spent to "renew"
everybody's setup and disks, the industry made really (really) a lot of
money. 
So: too much money involved = same standards as any product. We ended
up selling CD players and CDs (unfortunately) like Pepsi.
