Yes you are completely right I totally missed it but upon going back an reading further I noticed how the reviewer is stuck very much in Apple land: "Even though the Duet system must gather its information from the iTunes music files on your home computer" This is must definitely NOT true. In the "This or That?" sidebar he again mentions that holy grail of computer audio the iTunes library and yet nowhere does he mention how iTunes cannot play flac files. I will free admit to not liking Apple all that much but I find iTunes to be a very poor music library management tool and its lack of support for flac at this late stage is completely unforgivable.
