I sort of disagree with the thrust of this thread. I find the mags very useful, as they let me know what's on the market. I don't have anyone else interested in seriously good audio where I live, and I wouldn't know about anything new without the mags. Although they mostly review very expensive equipment, they also review "value" items like the Duet and even budget items, like $40 earphones.
In addition, when reading the reviews they often compare two similar products: I find this useful, as I can often tell which one of the two I'd prefer - just from the description. There are also certain reviewers that I've learned I can trust. There are a couple of writers at TAS who are enthusiastic users of Logitech units and other digital audio devices, and seem to have a good grasp of the various devices on the market and what they are and aren't capable of. I basically trust what they write, and more sceptically read what some of the others write. All that said, I agree that it does get tiresome every issue to read that something is the "greatest ever". -- firedog Tranquil PC fanless WHS server running SqueezeCenter; SB Duet through Empirical Audio Pace Car; TACT 2.2XP with MauiMods; MF X-150 amp, Devore Super 8 Speakers; Mirage MS-12 sub; Dual 506 + Ortofon 20 (occasional use); sometimes use PC with M-Audio 192 as digital source.
