This makes me realize just how much I miss the old Stereo Review
magazine (the predecessor to today's Sound+Vision mag). I could always
count on them to give me honest reviews and not drink the overhyped,
overpriced hi-end fringe Kool-aid. (SR was one of the first to go after
the myths of the hi-end cables / speaker cord malarky.) But somewhere
in the '90s, the middle of the music listening market collapsed - all
that was left was the crappy low end (boomboxes and their ilk) and the
nutjob high end (basically New Age crap). One of the joys of the
Squeezebox line is that it has resurrected the middle-of-the-road
experience - a $300 box gives you easy, high quality access to more
music than most of us ever dreamed we would have. But I think the days
of good audio magazines are gone forever.
