Before you do anything, you might experiment with room acoustics and
speaker placement. You'd want to look at the relationship of your
listening spot to the speakers. If there are any strong primary
reflection points, those can affect imaging. You can experiment by
temporarily hanging something like a quilt in various spots left and
right to see how that changes things. 

Similarly, room layout and speaker placement can also dramatically
affect bass quality. 

In addition to trying the speakers in different spots, try different
toe-ins. This can affect the amount of direct to reflected sound you
hear. As you can see, there are a lot of potential variables to work
with. 

Once you're optimized the present setup, then you can start thinking
about other changes if you still wish. Why spend money if the solution
is simply a matter of you spending some time experimenting? 

I also wouldn't get too caught up in the active/passive monitor issue.
Built in amps are meaningless if you don't like the speaker.
