I'll chime in, too. Excellent summary, adamdea. It got me to thinking of some of the incredibly fine recordings I have on CD. One of the best I've ever heard is The Great American Main Street Band's "Silks & Rags", a collection of jazz material from early in the 20th century, played by a brass band. (Angel, 1991.)
It makes good use of the CD's dynamic range, is not miked too closely and absent the special enhancements record producers seem too fond of adding. It is a stunningly natural presentation of the musicians preforming in front of you. However, this recording is great because of the care and attention paid by those who made it 20 years ago when the capability for high-rez basically didn't exist. I have many excellent recordings on CD. The problem is not the format. The problem is we don't use what we have right now. Going 24/96/192/384 does absolutely nothing to address the real problems in recordings. It's like a magician's trick - draw your attention to something that doesn't matter and make you think it does. I imagine a group of audiophiles would be a dream audience for a magician. ;-) -- mlsstl ------------------------------------------------------------------------ mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=89733 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/audiophiles
